NTM Knowledge Texts Translations Launched by Hon’ble HRM Smt. Smriti Irani
The Hon’ble HRM Smt. Smriti Irani, along with other guests, released the Knowledge
Texts Translations and the latest issue of the journal Translation Today by National
Translation Mission, CIIL on 25th May 2016. The translations were released during
a function held for launching Bharatavani Portal and App (developed by CIIL, Mysore
as part of the Hon’le Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi’s Digital India Project)
at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
National Translation Mission (NTM), Central Institute of Indian Languages is a Government
of India initiative to establish translation as an industry in the country to benefit
all sections of the society to have continuous access to knowledge in all disciplines.
The endeavor is through a combination of efforts like encouraging publishers to
publish translations of titles from higher education; educating and certifying translators;
developing translation tools (dictionaries, glossaries etc.); bringing together
Machine Translation research groups to find common solutions; maintaining databases of
published translations from and into Indian languages, experts in translation etc
and becoming a ‘store house’ and a ‘clearing house’ of information on translation
in the country. Apart from the students and academia who are benefitted by the publications,
translators of the titles and trainees of NTM training programmes take up translation
jobs and it become a source of income for them. These include people from all sections
of the society, like, women, minorities etc.
