Skill development of translators is one of the focus areas of NTM. The Mission offers training to translators in the form of Intensive Programme and Orientation Programme. It also offers academic support to professional translators. Efforts are on to offer Certificate and Diploma courses in Translation.

3-Week Intensive Training Programme

Who should attend? This programme is for those who translate as a hobby or wish to build a career as a translator. It is also for professional translators and Translation Studies students who want to enhance their knowledge and improve their skills. The participants usually include (a) Early careeremployees and students registered in various universities/institutions, (b) Language officers working in different government and semi-government set-ups, (c) persons involved in CSTT activities, etc.

Where? The training and orientation programmes take place at the National Translation Mission, Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore. The programmes also take place at other locations as and when there is collaboration with host institutions.

What are the topics covered during the course? The programme mainly focuses on the following topics:

ii. History of Translation and Theories of Translation
Translation History in India, Translation History in the West, Theories of Translation
iii. Linguistics and Translation
Language Structure and Translation, Word Formation in Translation, Equivalence in Translation
iv. Literary Translation
Features of Literary Translation, Genre of Literary Translation Problems and Possible solution in Literary Translation
v. Ideology and Translation
Subjectivity & Translation, Politics and Translation, Culture & Translation
vi. Translation Evaluation
Parameters & Principles in evaluating a Translation
vii. Non-Literary Translation
Features of Non-Literary Translation, Translation & Science Communication, Scientific & Technical Translation
viii. Scientific and Technical Terminology
Identifying Scientific & Technical Terms, Various Methodsfor Translating Scientific & Technical Terms
ix. Machine Translation (MT)
Machine Translation & Human Translation, Types of MT, Process & Mechanism in MT, MT Tools
x. Subtitling, Dubbing, Interpretation
xi. Globalization, Localization and Translation
xii. Practicum and Evaluation Interested applicants may kindly note that their progress would be monitored through translation assignments. The selected trainees need to translate journal articles or book chapters from English to their language & Vice-versa.

Fee: There is no course fee as such. However, the participants need to deposit a sum of Rs.500/- at the start of the programme. This money is adjustable with one-year subscription of the Journal, Translation Today. NTM may reimburse the expenses incurred towards travel (by 3AC or lower class) on the production of tickets to and from Mysore. Onwards journey (original ticket) & return journey ticket photo-copy should be enclosed with TA form. The training programme provides free boarding and lodging (on shared basis).

Who are the trainers? NTM has a pool of trainers who are experts in the field. Some of the trainers work as in-house resource persons at NTM/CIIL while are engaged from different Institutions. Note: Applications are accepted throughout the year. The application cover should be superscribed as 'Application for NTM Translation Training Course' on the left hand top corner. Those who are in service or on any regular assignment need to forward their applications through their employer or head of the Institution. Names of the selected candidates will be posted on the website of the CIIL and NTM.
