The main objective of National Translation Mission (NTM) is to make knowledge texts available in the scheduled languages of India. NTM has designed a scheme of various processes and levels to carry out the task. Assigning work under each process, stage and level will be in the following way.
Identification of Knowledge Texts
Identification of knowledge texts for translation under various disciplines is the first step. NTM has a core content team situated at CIIL. This team is creating a database of knowledge texts in the sixty nine disciplines chosen by NTM.

| Knowledge Texts identified by NTM are bought either directly from publishers if they are available in India or through retail outlets. These books are then distributed to the translators by NTM.

Assigning Translation |
Translation assignments will be given to different translators registered under the National Register for Translators maintained at CIIL by NTM. Assignment will be based on their relevant merits for respective works. Availability and reachability of the translator are also considered as NTM is a time-bound programme. Selection of the translator for a book is done by a committee constituted for the purpose by NTM. The strategy would be to have three translators for each book for completion of translation within the stipulated period.

Assigning Evaluation |
| The National Register for Translators (NRT) maintained by NTM also contains information of translation experts who can evaluate translations. Evaluation committees are constituted for books basically on two criteria – the language and the disciplines. The committee members are sent copies of the translation. They meet more than once depending on the amount of suggestions for corrections or modification required for each translation. When all the corrections have been made, the translation is given back for a final approval by the evaluation committee. The translation is then passed on to publications unit. |
Print Publications & E-books |
Translated knowledge texts are made available both as print publications and as E-books by NTM. These translations are available in 22 Indian languages. While NTM basically makes use of both the press facilities available at CIIL and also collaborating with various regional and national publishers with regards to its print publications.
E-books are specifically designed and published on NTM websites by the team at NTM with the help of the respective language and discipline experts.

Software Tools |
| NTM also encourages research and development of translation software. A team of software engineers work at NTM to produce the various translation and dictionary software. Help of various experts from academic institutions, industries and corporate houses are sought for this purpose by NTM. Some of these tasks are outsourced by NTM. The software produced is made available on the NTM website. |
