Assuring Translation Quality
NTM has devised various strategies and measures to achieve required quality in all its translations. Quality check and maintenance is uniformly applied across all the 22 languages and 69 disciplines. Care is taken to address language or discipline specific concerns too while doing quality check.

One of the first steps in assuring quality is the creation and standardisation of terminology in the translations in respective languages. NTM, in consultation with organisations like the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT), National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) etc. is in the process of developing Scientific and Technical Terminology in all the 22 languages.
 
NTM makes templates for each discipline to suit the type of content generated. Predefined style sheets and Document type definitions (DTD) are created with respect to different languages and disciplines for the place and style of headers, sub headers, body texts, images, graphs, audio/video material, other graphics etc.

NTM provides sample files for each discipline both to the translator as well as to the print and web content developers to maintain uniformity in all the pages. These sample files are also accessible from NTM website.
 
NTM is preparing evaluation matrices for use by its evaluators for the various translations. Experts from the field in collaboration with translation and language experts prepare the matrices. Care is being taken to accommodate suitable modifications in both content and design for translations in various languages and respective disciplines. Each translation has to gain a minimum set of credits under the matrix to be allowed for publishing.
 
NTM invites its users and the general public, who are either directly or indirectly benefited by its efforts to comment on the publications, translation software, e-dictionaries etc. ‘Users’ means, those who read the translations for themselves or the various universities, colleges, institutions, teachers and NGO’s who use the NTM translations in their teaching and awareness programmes. NTM welcomes comments and suggestions on all aspects like, the use of language, readability, intelligibility, format of the publications, type of binding, distribution, pricing, accessibility etc.
 
NTM adopts classroom testing as one of the ways of assuring quality for its translations. Translations in different disciplines are made available to teachers to be used in respective classrooms. The response in classrooms, both by the students and the teachers, for the translations is recorded systematically. Needed modifications are done to increase its usability before the final edition is made public.
 
NTM involves a team of professionally qualified editors and copy-editors for compiling its translations. Industry standard editing software and technological equipments are provided to this team. Help of various regional and national corporate publishing houses is sought in standardising the methods of editing and copy-editing needed for NTM publications.
 
NTM sorts out issues of adaptation for its translations through the team of expert from different languages and disciplines. Creation and standardisation of technical terminology was one of the measures adopted by NTM to iron out issues of adaptation. Both coining of new terms and paraphrasing are adopted as techniques of translation, when the target language does not have equivalents for the terms or concepts in the source text. Classroom testing is another way that checks the intelligibility and usability of the adaptation of language and concepts in the translations.
