Aspects of NTM
The primary activity of National Translation Mission is the translation of Knowledge Texts along with which translator eduction, information dissemination, creating terminology etc. are an integral part of National Translation Mission. These issues will be addressed through coordination and cooperation with a variety of organizations like the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT), National Council for Educational and Research Training (NCERT), National Book Trust (NBT), University Grants Commission (UGC), Sahitya Akademy, Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysore, Granth Academies, Public Library Networks etc. This will prevent overlapping and duplication.

Apart from public institutions synergetic relationship will be created with publishers, print and electronic media, corporate houses and booksellers.

The initiatives which are part of National Translation Mission are:
 
A. CREATING TECHNICAL & SCIENTIFIC TERMINOLOGY
Translation and standardisation of technical and scientific terminology is a primary requirement in the translation of knowledge texts, as is also disallowing the use of non-standard terms, slang words and conceptual formulations. The efforts of National Translation Mission (NTM) will strengthen The Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT) and evolve and define scientific and technical terms in in the 22 scheduled languages so as to enable quick translation of knowledge based texts. NTM will work with C-DAC to develop tools to enable these terminologies to be available online in all the 22 languages.
B. TRANSLATOR EDUCATION
Translation is a specialised activity. In the translation of knowledge texts, highly trained translators specialising in specific disciplines and translations are required. National Translation Mission (NTM) will train such personnel through the following:

1. Organising short-term training programmes involving scholars/experts in the areas concerned for specific purposes like interpretation, subtitling, translation of law, pure sciences, applied sciences, social sciences etc.

2. Producing course modules and packages for translators that can be incorporated into language teaching programmes across the country or run as special courses during vacations, post-work or post-class hours etc.

3. Encouraging, supporting and assisting in the development of specialised courses in translation technology and related areas in universities and other institutions;

4. Encouraging research projects including student research intended specifically for making available good translations of identified texts.

5. Instituting Fellowship programmes that for the exchange of scholars between institutions with special emphasis on translation between Indian languages;

6. Organising workshops where experts and trainees come together to discuss and solve specific issues relating to the text in terms of knowledge content, terminology, cultural and linguistic context etc

7. Organising workshops in vetting, editing and copy-editing translations
C. DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION
National Translation Mission aims to actively disseminate information on the availability of tranlators and translations through the following ways:

    1.Creating a data repository of translators in different disciplines and areas with diverse skills and qualifications;

    2.Producing an online bibliography of existing translations of different works in all the Indian languages as also Indian works in English and other foreign languages, with search facilities based on disciplines, languages and areas as also facilities for users to have inputs.
D. VISIBILITY AND VIABILITY
National Translation Mission will give more visibility to translators and translation activities. With NTM it becomes possible for translation to become a well-paying profession. The National Register for Translators will list translators in different areas. Evaluation boards constituting of experts from the concerned disciplines, scholars in the original and target languages and enlightened readers decide whether a translator is worthy of being registered and taken into the national pool.
E. ENSURING ACCESS TO AND PROPAGATION OF TRANSLATION
Some other means to promote and make translations visible are:

    1. Organising book launches for translations

    2. Instituting prizes and fellowships

    3. Organising regional Festivals of Translation with readings, discussions, book exhibitions, honouring translators of the area etc

    4. Linking up with library networks in order to ensure an initial market for quality translations

    5. Buyback arrangements with publishers or translators

    6. Subsidies to translators and publishing houses to encourage translation

    7. Downloading facilities for translated pedagogic material, with a fee being payed to publishers per download

    8. Providing an interface between translators, university departments, publishers in public and private sectors and buyers

    9. Subsidising initially the publication of the translation of important journals in English in diverse disciplines into regional languages

    10. Getting translated material incorporated into the syllabi of schools, colleges and universities

    11. Helping to set up language resource centres and book nooks dealing in translated books in educational institutions at all levels

    12. Projecting the importance of bilingual/multlingual skills by pointing out the areas of its use and application, including examinations and job tests

    13. Linking up with public and civil society organisations to ensure greater access to translated materials especially in smaller towns and villages
